What is Vastu?
According to Hindu religious beliefs, Vastu is technique and style for designing the house keeping in mind certain directional aspects. Some common beliefs according to Vastu Shastra are as follows:
The main entrance door of the house should be constructed a bit larger than all the other doors available inside the house. It is always better to construct a couple of entrance doors for the house. However, it is to be kept in mind that among the two entrance doors, the main one should be constructed much larger than the other one available. The two entrance doors should be located exactly following the same straight line. The main entrance door of the house can be decorated with a Swastika marked symbol or an OM symbol. This indicates good luck and protection from all evils. Certain times, figures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses like Kuber, Ganesh and Lakshmi are also placed at the exterior portion of the main entrance door of the house. According to Vastu, this helps in bringing good luck to the entire family residing within the house.
Vastu also recommends that no violent picture or figurine should be kept inside the house neither should they be fitted at the doors. This lets bad fortune befall on the house holder as well on the entire family.
While designing and constructing the main entrance door, it should be kept in mind that the shutters of the doors open up towards the inside of the house. This is necessary in order to welcome the guests coming from outside. The main entrance doors should have two shutters acting over it. According to the Vastu, the material that is preferred for construction of the main entrance door should be high quality wood like teak, mahogany, etc. The construction should be done in such a way that no sort of any shadows fall over the door. It must not open up to any sort of wall structure. In order to have the main door placed correctly, the house should be divided into nine vital parts.
The fourth divisional part that is situated fourth in the series is the best one to let the major entrance door get placed. According to the Vastu, a common door should not be used as an entrance gate for two separate houses. Also, it is recommended that two oppositely situated house should not face entrance doors directly opposite to each other. The main entrance door should not be situated facing the south. It is also said that the front door of the house should face no demolished or abandoned property. The main site entrance and the main entrance door of the house id placed at the same direction, then prosperity showers (according to Vastu belief). The result may hinder and change in an adverse way if the door and entrance are placed at an opposite direction.
