The Thane Municipal Corporation was established on 1st October, 1982. It had a population of 7,90,000 as per the 1990 Census. The population has reached to about 14,00,000 in the year 2003. The Thane Municipal Corporation has undertaken many developmental projects and schemes since 1982 for a balanced development of the city. One of major projects is the Integrated Road Development Project.
