Municipal Corporation of Kolkata was incorporated as a local governing body by the British Government in the year 1690 in order to establish local trade, which was favorable in many villages. After independence, the state government in order to reform the existing system and make it more efficient passed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation act of 1980, which redefined the functions of the municipality department and started working with the responsibility of improving various civic amenities throughout the city. Kolkata Municipality provides numerous services ranging from construction of health centers, schools, slum development programs, sewage and waste management in the city. The city is one of the largest cities of India and accommodates a population of 4.6 million. Such a large population has ever-growing needs and daily requirements, which needs a specific agency that can work for providing all the facilities. From maintaining roads to construction of recreational centers and taking proper care of heritage sites, the Kolkata Corporation has undertaken many important projects, which are of significance to its citizens. The Kolkata Municipal Corp also regulates property tax on housing as well as commercial properties and issues trade license depending upon the criterion it has set for any kind of business.
Besides all this, the Kolkata Municipality Corporation aims at improving the quality level of their services concerning the demands of the people. For this purpose, it has launched Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project for introducing and implementing measures that will be environment friendly, will help in removing inadequacies present in the civic infrastructure, and will help in keeping up the urban standard of the city.
