Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai

Mumbai is the capital city of Indian state Maharashtra. It is located on the coast of Arabian Sea. It is the 4th most populous city in world. It is considered to be the entertainment and commercial capital of India.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai was established in the year of 1882. It is the first municipal corporation of India. It is popularly known as Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika. The primary motto of this corporation is to provide best facilities to citizens of Mumbai. Several non-governing bodies, NGOs, and influential citizen have worked with this municipality for growth and development of Mumbai and adjoining suburbs. MCGM has developed in several educational institutes, medical centers, urban amenities, housing, and commercial complexes. It has actively participated in heritage conservation projects.

Eco-housing project is one of the major initiatives of MCGM. Let’s have a clear look at the project:

Eco-housing program is a project that is concerned with promotion of energy efficient techniques and products, and adapting environment friendly practices. The main target is to make construction industry aware of importance to keep environment clean and green. The project focuses on the following area listed below:

  • Site Selection

  • Environment Architecture

  • Efficient Building Materials

  • Energy Management & Conservation

  • Water Conservation

  • Segregation of Waste

  • Other Innovative Measure

Assessment Criteria of Eco-housing Project (applicable to both new and retrofit buildings)

  • Applicable for both new and existing residential projects

  • Developed into a voluntary star rating and certification system

  • Criteria is made up of a combination of voluntary and mandatory measures

Additional assessment criteria for new buildings

  • A 1000 point system that incorporates 83 measures

  • A minimum of 500 points out of 1000 points required to qualify for Eco-housing certification

Additional assessment criteria for retrofit buildings

  • A 600 point system that incorporates 83 measures

  • A minimum of 150 points out of 600 points required to qualify for eco-housing certification

Under the effective guidance and administrative support from Municipal commissioner (additional), a conservation cell has been formed for Eco-housing Project. It is known as EHRCC (Eco-Housing and Resource Conservation Cell). It features 2 wings: Administrative and Technical.

Administrative Wing is located at the MCGM head office. It is headed by the chief engineer (Development & Planning). The main task of this wing is to accept the Eco-housing application forms and documents. Then, they carry out a basic scrutiny of the submitted documents.

Technical Wing is located at the CTIRC (Civic Training Institute and Research Center) office, Borivilli. It is headed by the executive engineer (civil). The main task of this wing is to validate every registered project. However, the final recommendation will only take place after proper verification of submitted documents and detailed on-site inspections.

The certification fees for new projects are 20 INR per sq. m (proposed build-up area). For retrofit projects, it is 1 INR per sq. m (proposed build-up area).
