Municipal Corporation of Chennai, formed in the year 1688 is one of the oldest municipal corporations in the country as it was established under the rule of East India Company. With the introduction of Parliamentary Act of 1792, the Britishers through the institution had the power to take taxes from the people. Today the city has grown not only in terms of area but also in terms of population, its divisions into so many districts have their own multiple problems so it was an essential requirement to reconstitute Chennai Municipal Corporation and redefine its areas of influence and service. The municipality now provides its community development services throughout the city and its small towns and villages. Their numerous departments are involved in making sure the availability of civic infrastructural facilities like construction of roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and ensuring proper water supply in every area. Besides this, it also maintains recreational spaces like parks and community halls. For administrative convenience, the Municipal Corporation of Chennai has divided the city into separate zones so that the population of a specific area can avail the services from their respective zones depending on their needs. |
