United Bank of India was established in 1950 by merger of four banks, namely, Comilla Banking Corporation Limited (established 1914), Bengal Central Bank Limited (established1918), Comilla Union Bank Limited (established 1922) and Hooghly Bank Limited (1932). At the time of nationalisation in 1969, United Bank of India had around 174 branches, today it spans the country with its Kolkata head office, 28 regional offices and 1370 branches.
It enjoys the stature of lead bank in the States of West Bengal, Assam, Manipur and Tripura. United Bank of India is particularly involved in the spread of banking services throughout the country with a stronghold in Eastern and Northeastern India. United Bank has also launched two floating mobile branches to make the bank accessible to the Sunderbans area of West Bengal; these have been converted to full-fledged branches now.

United Bank of India is the largest finance provider to the Tea Industry in Northeast India. This has given a unique nickname to United Bank of India. It is also called the 'Tea Bank'. The overseas branches of United Bank of India are situated at Kolkata, New Delhi and Mumbai. These have a full-fledged office and SWIFT terminal.
