In Mumbai, MHADA Flats have made affordable housing possible for Low-Income Group and Middle-Income Group. MHADA was formed in 1977 with an aim to accommodate the housing needs of the ever-increasing population of Mumbai, in particular, and Maharashtra, in general. MHADA was an amalgamation of the government agencies like the Maharashtra Housing Board, the Bombay Buildings Repairs and Reconstruction Board, the Maharashtra Slum Improvement Board.
MHADA has undertaken many developmental and welfare activities with an aim to provide an integrated approach towards improving the living conditions and solving the housing issues in a fair manner. So far, many slum dwellers have been rehabilitated under the program of Environmental Improvement of Slum. Under various such schemes, basic amenities like drinking Water, Toilets, Sewage etc have been provided. In fact, the slum areas of Dharavi were rampant with unhealthy and anti-social elements, but MHADA carried out developmental activity under the MHADA special Planning Authority.
